Apple’s Square – Cash in on Your Side Projects
These days, many of us have extra sources of income outside the office. Whether you cut hair, groom dogs, sell crafts, or fix lawnmowers, Apple has made it easier for you to collect payment on the go with Square.
What is it?
Square turns your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch into a credit card reader. As the name suggests, it's a square-shaped piece of compact hardware that plugs into your device, with a slot at the top for swiping cards.
The reader operates with the free Square Register app available from the iTunes App Store.
How it works
The Square payment system is fairly straightforward. There are no contracts or monthly fees. The cost to you is 2.75% per transaction, which is automatically deducted before payments are processed.
Square Register is optimized for the iPhone 5, but the app is compatible with any device running on iOS 5.0 or later. The hardware itself goes for $9.95.
This system makes it easy and convenient to bring your side business with you, and more convenient for your customers, who may not always carry cash.
