The Evolving Role of Today’s CIO

The Evolving Role of Today’s CIO

Times are changing at a pace that often seems difficult to keep up with and changing in parallel are executive positions and the roles they play within an organization. Looking back on the position of CIO a decade ago would suggest a much different role than that played by CIOs today.

Many CIOs believe that their role is regularly being re-framed, and they are not wrong in this belief. This is largely due to the current digital transformation that many organizations are in the midst of. It used to be that CIOs were focused on constructing and dispatching technologies at an organization. However, that has largely changed as the role has evolved into more of a guiding force for the purchase and adoption of technologies, as well as inspiring innovation.

This evolution should be viewed in a positive light, as CIOs play a more important role than ever before. They hold significant influence over corporate strategy, drive the capabilities of a business, and help expand opportunities that lead to the generation of new revenue.

In order to successfully carry out this role, there are some necessary characteristics that CIOs must possess…

Innovative Mindset

As we mentioned above, today’s CIO isn’t just the individual that ensures technology is running smoothly. They are now much more influential, as they are often the driving force behind innovation at an organization.

Leadership at modern organizations need to be conscious of technology, and CIOs should be the ones offering insight and guidance as it relates to the latest and most effective technological trends. A CIO is now looked to for knowledge regarding tools that will help organizations innovate and become more competitive.

Communication

Communication is all too critical to be left out of conversations taking place at the CIO level. Where silos used to exist at organizations, technology has bridged the gaps. The result is improved collaboration and free-flowing ideas from department to department, and between clients and employees. It’s for this reason that CIOs need to excel in the area of communication and ensure that technology inspires and allows for clear communication at their company.

An Affinity for Collaboration

One of the areas of an organization that CIOs are now influencing is workplace collaboration. A large reason for this is that in recent years, collaboration has been improved upon by technology. Slack, Trello, Dropbox, Google Drive, and plenty of other tools have made the process of working as a team much easier. CIOs have thus become a source of knowledge and ideas when it comes to the implementation of new collaboration-oriented technology at an organization.

These characteristics have become very important for the modern CIO. This role is arguably the most prone to change out of any of the executive roles, and this is due to the rapid rate of change in the realm of technology.

The changes likely won’t stop soon, which is why the most effective CIOs are those that are nimble and able to adapt along with the times. If you are a CIO, it is important that you remain open and perceptive when it comes to the evolution of technology. Open-minded, inquisitive, and adaptive CIOs will find that they are much more effective in their roles than those who are not ready for a role that is regularly evolving.
